Plague and pox

Everyone was afraid of bubonic plague, or the Black Death. It caused fever and big black swellings on the armpits and legs. Most victims died within a few days. It was treated by cutting the swellings with a needle, then slapping on a hot mixture of butter, onion and garlic. This did no good at all, but it smelt delicious.

Doctors wore long gowns and a mask with a beak that had strong-smelling herbs inside. They thought this would stop them from catching the smelly disease. It didn’t!
